CV-22 Osprey

This is
the Air Force's version, the CV-22, which will replace
the MH-53 Pave Low.
Note:
This page deals specifically with the V-22 Osprey as
it relates to U.S. Special Operations; the CV-22 version
(the MV-22 is the USMC version). Links are provided
below for those who are looking for general information
on the Marine and civilian variants of the program.
Overview of
the Osprey and its Role in the Future of U.S. Special
Operations
The V-22 is being developed
to perform United States Marine Corps (USMC), United
States Navy (USN), and United States Special Operations
Command (USSOCOM) combat missions for the year 2001
and beyond. The MV-22 is the highest priority
for Marine Corps aviation and is critical to the implementation
of the Naval Services' Operational Maneuver from the
Sea concept. The V-22 Osprey will replace the
Marine Corps CH-46E and CH-53D as well as several types
of the Special Operations Command MH-53, MH-47, MH-60,
and MC-130 series aircraft. The Air Force is acquiring
the Ospreys to replace its fleet of MH-53J Pave Low
helicopters used to insert and extract special operations
forces covertly from hostile areas. The acquisition
of this medium lift tiltrotor VSTOL aircraft represents
a revolutionary leap in our ability to project forces
from over the horizon toward inland objectives.
The V-22 will fly twice as fast, several times further,
and with a heavier payload than the helicopters it replaces;
it is the key to execution of maneuver warfare and greatly
enhances survivability of our warfighters. IOC
for the MV-22 is 2001.
