Webmaster's Note: The 228th is not a Special Operations unit, however they are included here due to their frequent interaction with US SOF units in this theater of operations.  D Company, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment is the primary provider of special ops aviation assets in the region.

General Information

Howard AFB, Panama - JIATF-S is our nation’s primary vehicle for integrating U.S. Department of Defense assets into regional counterdrug efforts in Panama and South America. JIATF South executes U.S. National Counterdrug Policy by supporting U.S. Federal Agency and Participating Nation counterdrug efforts to deter, degrade, and disrupt the production and transshipment of illegal drugs within and from Panama and South America.

The United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is the unified command responsible for all U.S. military activities in South America and Central America. Its area of responsibility encompasses 19 countries, represents about one-sixth of the world's land mass and covers about seven million square miles, stretching 6,000 miles from Mexico's southern border to Cape Horn. The command supports U.S. interests in the southern theater by establishing and implementing plans, programs and policies that contribute to the defense of the U.S. and its allies.
