1 Commando Regiment

Selection Process

All personnel wishing to serve with the Commandos who are not already in the Australian Army must join the Army Reserve.   The Australian Defence Force Recruiting Unit conducts testing for joining the Army Reserve once a month.

The enlistment process includes:
 
Aptitude test,
Thorough medical examination, and
Interview with a psychologist.
All soldiers  will then be required to complete Common Induction Training.   This is a six week recruit course which covers field craft and tactics in order to qualify the member a soldier. This is followed by a an Initial Employment Training course of 6 weeks to further develop infantry skills.

Commando Selection Day
 
 

The 1st Commando Regiment offers a broad spectrum of challenging, demanding and rewarding activities that develop personnel attributes and teamwork.   Before the soldier can  fully participate in these Regimental activities, it is necessary to assess their personnel qualities to deem their suitability for service
with the Commandos. 

The aim of the Commando Selection day is to assess the applicants suitability to join the 1st Commando Regiment.   There are a number of tests and criteria the applicant must fulfil in order to be deemed suitable for service in Commandos.
 

The Basic Physical Assessment - The minimum standard is:
2.4km run in less than 10 minutes.
100 situps in less than 2 minutes.
60 pushups in less than 2 minutes.
10 chinups (no time limit).
400m swim in 20 minutes and tread water for 2 minutes dressed in Army Disruptive Camouflage Pattern Uniform
Group Activity Assessment - The following skills are examined:

Problem solving and decision making.
Initiative.
Communication.
Teamwork.
Interview - The interview is conducted to assess the applicants:
Personnel qualities.
Time commitment.
Performance.

SF Selection

All soldiers who wish to serve with 1 Cdo Regt must complete the Special Forces Group selection process. Conducted over three days it consists of:
 
Aptitude Assessment
Interviews
Physical Testing consisting of:
                  Run 3.2 km in under 16 minutes with webbing and rifle (12kg).
               20 km route march with a 20 kg pack in under 3h:15min.
               Climb up and down a 6m rope with webbing and rifle (12kg) twice.
               Swim 400m in 20 minutes and tread water for 2 minutes.

Throughout the selection process and in subsequent training the following attributes ara assessed:
 
Fitness.   The applicant must be able to pass all Commando physical fitness and endurance tests and display the dexterity and vigour required for Commando operations.
Discipline.   The soldier must display mental stability, composure and tolerance and demonstrate the ability to control and channel aggression in the required direction.
Adaptability.    The soldier must demonstrate an ability to adjust to changing circumstances, cope with unexpected setbacks and be comfortable operating height and in the amphibious environment.
Resolve.   The soldier must demonstrate strength of character, determination and the fortitude to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.
Trainability.   The soldier must demonstrate an ability to assimilate, recall and apply teachings and an aptitude for Commando basic and specialist skills.
