Counterterrorist Unit Prepares for Sydney Games
In preparation for the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games, the Tactical Assault
Group, or TAG, of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, and its
rotary-wing air support, have been training in the Sydney area to familiarize
themselves with local operating conditions. TAG has been Australia's primary
counterterrorism force since 1978. Since 1996, the elite unit has received more
than $30 million in upgrades and new equipment to enhance its capabilities.
Full-time elements of the 4th battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment or RAR,
and the New South Wales Police will augment TAG in counterterrorism operations
during the Games.
