The Department conducts general language courses
in Indonesian on the Laverton and Canberra campuses
and Military Basic courses at the Special Air Service
Regiment in Perth. Other major courses conducted at
Laverton include Military Primary Skills courses in
Indonesian and Specialist Basic and Conversion courses
in Malay. An Indonesian General Linguist Advanced
Course is conducted at Laverton in November and December
each year.
The JIM Department conducts some 14 Qualifying Courses
each year at sites around Australia, to enable ADF
Indonesian linguists to requalify in their languages.
Mobile training teams are formed on demand to conduct
short language and culture courses.
The Department develops nearly all of its own teaching
materials in its Course Development Unit that is located
at Laverton. There are Field Study Excursions in Indonesia
or Malaysia for most courses.
The Lecturer-in Charge is Mr Barry Turner. He is
assisted by Mr David Deck, who is designated Projects
Officer. Course Development Unit members - Mrs Anna.
Day, Mr Rick Clarke (General Course Development) and
Mr Matt van der Lugt (Military Primary Skills Course
Development) – are other members of Mr Turner’s staff.
The Coordinator of the Military Skills Course, Dr
John Pello, is the Deputy Lecturer-in-Charge of the
Department. He has two other staff members; Mrs Titiek
Kidd, and Mr Agus Triyanto.
The Coordinator of the Indonesian General Course
Laverton is Mr Philip Rachmat. He is assisted by Mr
Philip Hartono, Mrs Novi Arnost, and Mr Anton Alimin.
Mrs Arnost also coordinates the General Linguist
Advanced Course and Javanese training.
The Coordinator of the Indonesian General Course
Canberra is Mrs Charlene Darmadi.
Dr Jusnan Budiman is Coordinator of Malay. His staff
members are Mrs Zufaidah Juri and Major (Malaysian
Defence Force) Mohamed Zubir.
Mr Purwanto Danusugondo is the Coordinator of the
Military Basic Course in Perth.
