Ready for a high altitude jump The Detachment Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol is the specialised unit of the Ground Forces of the Belgian Army, in the search for intelligence. Its missions can be given on behalf of different national or international Commands.

Equippe Specialise de Reconnaisance (ESR)

Long Range Reconnaisance Patrols (LRRP)

There are two distinct subunits of the ParaCommandos. One is known as the 60-man ESR (Equipes Speciales de Reconnaisance) that also works closely with the ESI in domestic situations. There is also a platoon-sized contingent of commandos trained for waterborne operations known as the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT). Both units have trained with the British SAS both in England and Ireland. These well-trained and experienced units operated recently in Turkey in reconnaissance operations against the Kurdish resistance movement and prior to this in Zaire where they provided anti-insertion and other training. Interestingly, ESR was officially disbanded in 1994, however it continues to operate.  The LRRP consists of about 30 land warriors and about 13 frogmen, who were just formed in 1995. The frogmen have operational duties that could be compared to the Navy SEALs ( e.g. mission lasts max. 72 hours w.o. resupply ) . The land LRRP operates like the SAS or US Special Forces ( e.g. mission lasts about 3 weeks w.o. resupply ).

Organisation

In peacetime, the detachment consists of:
a staff
a signal detachment
four permanent teams; additional to these teams are some non-permanent teams, consisting of "augmentees" coming from the Para-Commando Brigade.

In peacetime, the Detachment Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol's counts 30 men, all volunteers.

Mission

The Detachment Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol is ready to execute various missions in the search and transmission of intelligence.

Selection and training of the personnel diver

The basic formation of the personnel of the teams lasts six months and is organised inside the detachment. The candidates come from the various units of the Ground Forces. At the end of the course, the trainee must be able to:
survive alone in a hostile environment
identify all military equipment
transmit information with particular radio systems.

All of the team members knowledge, will, endurance and initiative are required. During its service in the unit, the personnel will attend a lot of specialisation courses in Belgium or abroad and will take part in international exercises

History

In 1958, a special intelligence unit is created in Weiden near Cologne. It consists of about 50 men. In 1961, this unit reaches 130 men and is called the "1ère Compagnie d'Equipes Spécialisées de Reconnaissance, which can be translated into the 1st Company of Specialized Intelligence Teams. In 1994, due to the reorganisations in the Belgian Army, the unit is disbanded. Nevertheless, 30 men of the 1ère Compagnie d'Equipes Spécialisées de Reconnaissance will move to Heverlee ( Leuven) in order to form the new unit that will become the Detachment Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol. This unit has the same type of missions as the former 1ère Compagnie d'Equipes Spécialisées de Reconnaissance, but with reduced strength.
