Special Forces

Eritrean Special Forces is unique among most modern special operations units in that women are permitted to operate alongside men in combat missions.  This force specializes in raids and reconnaissance and has put these skills to the test in the ongoing Ethio-Eritrean War.  The Ethio-Eritrean conflict began when armed Eritrean troops launched a surprise invasion of Ethiopia on May 6, 1998. Eritrea opted for war despite the fact that a Joint Border Commission was already in place to negotiate a solution to the border dispute.
