Special Operations and Counterterrorist Forces

The Hungarians have no direct special operations units, per se. . . But  they do have some rapid reaction units that I guess would be special  operations capable, all of which are under the subordination of the Ground  Forces component of the Hungarian Defense Force.

The primary military component of Hungarian special operations is centered on the 88th Rapid Reaction Battalion, which is attached as a core component of the Hungarian 3rd Mechanized Division (the only combat division in the entire Ground Forces component). The 88th is tasked with a special reaction mission. It is a predominately air assault oriented unit, supported by the 89th Transport Aviation Regiment, which is an Mi-8T unit.

The other components of Hungarian special operations (also components of the 3rd Mechanized Division) are the 24th (Bornemissza Gergely) and 34th (Bercsenyi Laszlo) Recon Battalions, which deal with LRS type operations. The typical recon team is organized into a squad of 1+7. These units are airborne capable.

The TO&E of all three units are essentially ex-Warsaw Pact armaments, with the AMD-65 (Hungarian AK-47 with pistol grip on fore stock) and man-portable ATGM's (AT-3,4,5,6) making up the firepower of all units.
