Unit Profile:
COMSUBIN
(known less formally as the Incursori) are the Italian
equivalent of the U.S. Navy’s SEALs or Germany’s KSK.
Its operators are extensively trained in reconnaissance,
small unit raids, and are known to be parachute-qualified.
The unit is currently based at La Spezia on Italy’s
western coast with direct access to the waters of
the Ligurian Sea.
It is important to note that the Italians also
pioneered, along with the British, the use of small,
manned submersibles (both of the “dry” and “wet” variety).
Reports indicate that the tradition continues
today, albeit with much more advanced equipment, much
of which is produced in the units own factory.
In any event, the combat divers of COMSUBIN
possess tools which give them a capability not shared
by the vast majority of maritime counterterrorist
units worldwide.
COMSUBIN is considered one of the most skilled
naval SOF units in the world. They conduct training with numerous nations, including the
US NAVSPECWARCOM and JSOC, Britain's Special Boat
Service, and Israel's Flotilla 13.
Training for this group lasts approximately
2 1/2 years.
Reader information:
COM.SUB.IN. is the heir
of a glorious unit of Italian's Navy during The WWII:
the X MAS. The group is similar to Navy Seals and
SBS, with the same role and equipment: SDV, zodiac,
rigid boat. The unit is based in La Spezia and depend
directly from the Chief of Navy. The course lasts
about a year and it is similar to Col Moschin for
free falling, sniping, rock climbing, but with great
emphasis on movement in water, the use of scuba equipment
and underwater demolition. The operators of COMSUBIN
take part to all the Italian mission, they were in
Libano 1982-1984, Persian Gulf (with the role to protect
the Italian ship), Somali, Rwanda, Albania. They don't
have a great number of occasions to show their real
value and their ability, but have a great regard on
the press and on the other Navy SF.
