New Watercraft for the Army
ZAMBOANGA
CITY - The Philippine
Army Commanding General inaugurated seven Army Special
Forces Watercrafts at the Construction/Maintenance
Detachment, 1st Special Forces Battalion
(1SFBn) of the Special Forces Regiment Airborne, Special
Operations Command (SFRA, SOCOM) Phil. Army in Barangay
Recodo, Zamboanga City on November 17. Witnessing
the activity were SOCOM Commander, Brigadier General
Julius Javier, Regiment Commander of SFRA, Colonel
Allan D. Cabalquinto, some Army Headquarters and SOUTHCOM
staff officers, and 1st Infantry Division and SOCOM
officers and men. After the inspection of the
marine vessels and other facilities, the watercraft
operators exhibited a show of speed in front of the
detachment.
At the headquarters of the 1SFBn
(Riverine), SFRA in Talisay, Zamboanga City, the CG,
PA was tendered a simple " pass-in-review"
by the new watercrafts as a simple gesture of thanks
for his support and appreciation of the Unit’s requirements.
The seven watercrafts passed by in formation according
to speed with the fastest two semi-fiberglass 60HP
speedboats and the two all-steel 50-footer assault
boats at the middle and the three 34-footer wooden
pump boats with outrigger at the rear.
The construction of the watercrafts
started in August 1998 after Major Aminkadra S Undug,
Commanding Officer of 1SFBn (R), SFRA received the
funds amounting to P2.020M from Self Reliance Defense
Program army savings and P880,000.00 from CG, PA.
Some of the operational uses of these watercrafts
are inter-islands and ship to shore operation, interdiction,
intercept and intervention operation, narrow and shallow
water operation, re-supply and ex-filtration, search,
recovery and rescue operations and Special Forces
waterborne operations.
With all materials procured in the
local market, completion of said projects is one modest
contribution of the Philippine Army to the AFP in
its drive to improve the effectiveness and efficiency
of operating units at the minimum cost. With this,
the Commanding General, PA intends to construct more
watercrafts to support units in the field particularly
those near coastal areas and island waterways.
