OVERVIEW:
The Singapore Armed Forces Commandos is an
elite organisation that has a Command Headquarters
with the School of Commandos within it, a NS Battalion,
an active Battalion and the Special Operation Force.
Attacking from land, sea or air, the versatile
Commandos are the elite soldiers of the Army. With
special weapons and intense training, they work in
small, autonomous groups behind enemy lines. The Commandos
successfully rescued 123 hostages from the hijacked
SQ117 on 26th March 1991. 1st Commando Battalion holds
the record as the 14-time Best Combat Unit of the
SAF.
The Commando fraternity
is founded on adventure, moulded in common hardship
and sealed in the tightest espirit de corps. Commandos
are inculcated with the tenets of disciplined aggression,
leadership and team spirit.
In the search for excellence
and effective fighting skills, the Commandos take
on the toughest courses, that equip them with the
edge over the enemy. Amidst tough training, Commandos
also pride themselves in being the best in anything
they do and this is evident in the sports they participate
in. Commandos also organize adventure expeditions
that take them to different corners of the earth.
They have dared and accomplished many ardous journeys
to the most unlikely places which is not only a pastime
but also an invaluable tool to widen the horizons
of Commandos who dare to venture into the unknown.
While the men who make
up the Commando Formation have changed over the years,
the philosophy and mindset of the entire Formation
is simple: Be the best in all that they do. The entire
Formation swears by this, and in their representation,
they take pride in representing the Formation and
Singapore.
Every commando is a trained parachutist,
part of the Airborne brotherhood. This emphasizes
the vital job of the Riggers. The Riggers' zero-accident
record bears testament to the their careful packing
of the parachutes.
The active battalion is 1st Cdo Battalion.
This is the unit that is made up of Full time National
Servicemen. It currently comprises of five companies
with an additional Headquarters Company. Throughout
the time that a Cdo fighter serves his nation, it
is here that he goes through the different training
phases and makes this his second home.
The Commando Training Centre (CTC) is the
Centre for Operationally Ready National Servicemen
(NSmen) as they return for their annual in-camp training
(ICT). As with all NSmen, the commitment to excellence
is something that all NS Commandos make in their daily
lives. The centre is in charge of all NSmen matters,
ranging from the annual IPPT, to arranging for their
currency airborne jumps, courses etc.
The School of Commandos (SOC)
is one of the premier training institutions of the
SAF. It is responsible for all specialist Commando
training as well as junior leadership training within
the Formation. All Commandos attend at least one course
in SOC during their stint in the Formation. SOC comprises
two wings, namely the Parachute Training Wing and
the Commando Training Wing. Each Wing is responsible
for specific areas of essential Commando training.
