Diplomatic Protection Group

History

As a signatory to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961, Her Majesty's Government is required to ensure the protection of the diplomatic community throughout the United Kingdom. In London, this responsibility falls to the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. As a result, in 1974 the Diplomatic Protection Group (DPG) was formed - its function to protect London's diplomatic community.

Responsibilities

The Diplomatic Protection Group is responsible for:
providing high visibility armed protection to diplomats, their missions and residences, in order to meet our obligation under the Vienna Convention
providing high visibility protection to members of HM Government and other prominent people potentially at risk
the provision of an armed contingency reserve for the Metropolitan Police Service
providing security at police buildings such as New Scotland Yard
providing residential protection for visiting Heads of State, Heads of Government and Foreign Ministers
maintaining the Central Index of Privileged Persons and Diplomatic Vehicles
providing crime prevention and security advice to Foreign Missions
liaison between the police service and visiting armed forces to meet our obligations under the Visiting Forces Act 1952.
