Firearms Unit

The specialist Firearms unit of the Suffolk Constabulary is known as the Operational Support Group.

It comprises officers who receive advanced training in the use of a variety of weapons and in Firearms tactics.

These officers crew Armed Response Vehicles whose role is to provide the initial response to Firearms incidents. The Operational Support Group also provide officers trained in the protection of V.I.P's and to take part in planned operations.

When not engaged in this primary role, they provide support to other areas of the Force across the whole spectrum of police work.

Although officers on the Operational Support Group are highly trained in the use of Firearms and tactics, a successful operation is one where no shots are fired and the situation is resolved peacefully.
