Jessie's Scouts

Yes there were "special operations" teams during the Civil War.  One group were a Federal Group organized by Gen. Fremont called Jessie's Scouts. They were named after Gen. Fremont's wife.  They operated in Western Virginia and the Shenandoah valley. They conducted extraction operations as well as assassinations.
