ASIS is Australia's foreign intelligence service.

Mission

Its mission is to protect and promote Australia's national interests through the provision of unique foreign intelligence services as directed by government.

Introduction

The Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) is Australia's overseas intelligence collection agency. ASIS conducts its activities in conformity with Australia's laws, foreign policies and in the interests of Australia's national security, foreign relations and national economic well-being.

Background

ASIS was established by the Government in May 1952 and the headquarters is located in Canberra. ASIS is within the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio and is responsible directly to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The Functions of ASIS

In broad terms, the functions of ASIS are to:

obtain information, in accordance with the Government's requirements, about the capabilities, intentions or activities of people or organisations outside Australia;
distribute this information to relevant Government agencies;
conduct counter-intelligence activities; and
liaise with overseas intelligence and security agencies.
