How is it the 112 Signal Battalion can be two places at once?

While their main body of the battalion is located at Fort Bragg, N.C., one detachment is here in Korea with a special mission: the Army Airborne signal team deploys with Special Operations Command Korea to set up communications via satellite to the world.

That way the team can actually help the Special Forces team they deploy with to be at two places at once, because during war, the Special Forces must according to their motto, be "anywhere, anyplace."

The detachment deploys with and operates a versatile satellite system called the Scampy. The sytem is unique to Special Forces and is designed to exercise message traffic control to U.S. Special Operations Command or to other Special Operations units worldwide according to Maj. David A. John, detachment commander.

With the system, users can gain acces to secure and unsecure telephone, military and commercial, and to the secure an unsecure internet.

112 Signal Det. Korea recently exercised their capability in an exercise with the Republic of Korea Army. "In time of war we have to work together, said Republic of Korea 1st Lt. Chung Doug Jin, who participated in the exercise.

Sgt. 1st Class Gregory M. Ward, the frequency manager and noncommisioned officer in charge of the team said, "Special Forces soldiers are going to be Airborne qualified. Well, you’re going to want to have your signal soldiers airborne qualified so they can jump in with them and establish the first line of communication."
